Department of Veterans Affairs

As with the military, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) actively promotes the use of sustainable transportation solutions by their workforce. Similarly, VPSI has a substantial presence at VA Medical Centers all over the country with especially large commuter transportation programs at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, the West Palm Beach (Florida) VA Medical Center, the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, and the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. Making sure our veterans have convenient access to the VA Medical Centers in their area is facilitated by an active vanpool program that greatly reduces the need for employee parking at the medical center grounds.

Today, more than ever, the VA's transit benefit program makes sense. As of June 1, 2009 Department of Veterans Affairs employees using qualified transit to commute to and from the workplace will be eligible for a tax-free transportation benefit of up to $230 per month or the actual cost of the qualified transportation service, whichever is less. The maximum benefit will be increased to the new $230 per month threshold for VA employees outside of the National Capital Region (NCR) as of July 1, 2009. Qualified employees may apply for the transportation benefit by completing VA Form 0722 dated May 2008 and submitting it to their local Transit Program Manager. They will, in turn, process the applications though the Department of Veterans Affairs headquarters in Washington, DC.
